HCV/Section 8 Frequently Asked Questions
  1. When is the waiting list open?

    South Central MN Multi-County will accept online applications for the HCV/Section 8 waiting list beginning November 1st, 2024 at 8:00 AM and will remain open for an undetermined period of time.

  2. How do I apply?

    Applications will be accepted online only at: www.waitlistcheck.com/mn178

    Select Get Started, Register Now, and then enter account information.

    Applicants may use any computer, tablet, of smartphone with internet access to including free computers at public libraries.

    Applications will not be available at the SCMMC, and fax or e-mail requests will not be accepted.

  3. Can I apply more than once?

    No, applicants can only be on one application.

  4. What information do I need to apply?

    A valid email address

    Names, Social Security numbers, and birth dates for all household members

    The household's gross annual income


  5. Can I edit my application after I submit it?

    Yes, you can edit your application by logging into your online portal at: www.asssitancecheck.com

  6. Do I qualify for a preference?

    Households will be selected based on the Preference claimed and then the date and time their completed application is received by the HRA.

    To claim a preference, households must LIVE, WORK, or be enrolled and attending HIGHER EDUCATION in Martin, Nicollet, Sibley, Waseca, and Watonwan Counties. All households who claim a preference, will be placed before households on the waiting list who do not claim a preference.

    At the time of initial application, or at any time a household is active on our waiting list, the household can claim a preference. The HRA will verify the preference claimed by collecting the required documentation at the time the household comes to the top of the waiting list.

  7. What are the eligibility requirements for applying?

    The applicant and all members of the applicant's household must disclose the complete and social security number assigned to each household-member.

    You must income qualify per household size.


  8. What is the process when I come to the top of the list?

    The HRA will notify you via mailing that you have been selected. PLEASE NOTE: The HRA cannot predict how long it will take for you to get to the top of the list. • Failure to maintain your contact information to get notifications will result in being removed from the waiting list. • A final determination of eligibility will be made when the household is selected from the waiting list. • If and when households are deemed eligible to receive a voucher. they will receive a notification to schedule an in-person briefing appointment. This appointment provides a broad description of owner and family responsibilities, explains procedures, and includes instructions to lease a unit.

HCV Family Self-Sufficiency
The Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program is a work incentive program for participants receiving Section 8 HCV rental assistance. The FSS program coordinator will work with the head of the household to establish a five-year plan that includes employment, education, and training goals.

Rental Assistance Program
Minnesota Housing Finance Agency established the Housing Trust Fund Rental Assistance Program (RAP) to provide affordable housing opportunities to prevent and end homelessness for low income families. Rental assistance is intended to be temporary. Participants pay approximately 30% of their income for rent.
